Dear Sirs,
I am very pleased to contact you about our French-American-Italian project #MDFDEFriendshipMerciTrain75 celebrating in 2022 the 75th Anniversary of the American Friendship Food Train — the $40 million value people-to-people humanitarian program — launched by Washington D.C. columnist Drew Pearson to collect food for starving France and Italy in 1947.
Back in 1947, Hawaii, then a Territory, volunteered to donate one carload of sugar to the Friendship Train. The 5-day campaign was conducted during the first week of November 1947. Yet, in such a short time, Hawaiians all over the Islands were so enthusiastic that by the time Gov. Stainback landed in Los Angeles on Nov. 6, 1947 to attend the spectacular Hollywood send-off the next day, he was informed that C & H plant in Crockett had received a call from Honolulu stating that thanks to the money raised… there would not be ONE but actually TWO full carloads of sugar ready to be loaded unto the Friendship Train as soon as it got to Oakland (Nov. 8,1947).
As part of my extensive research re: Hawaii and California, I would really appreciate getting copies of docs re: C & H Friendship Train invoices, letters, photographs, newspaper articles etc… possibly housed in your Archives.
Looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience, I thank you in advance for your help and kind assistance.
Sincerely yours,
Elisabeth Jenssen Founder & President

Not sure if you would be interested, but I have an envelope addressed to FDR July 1938, c/o Postmaster in Crockett, two nice airmail stamps. I guess from FDR’s CA trip? Picture is up on eBay.
Do you have C&H employee records from the early 1900s?
